Ear wax usually clears on its own, but sometimes it builds up and causes problems. Common signs include:
Sounds seem quieter or muffled in one or both ears.
Your ear feels plugged, as if you've just stepped off a plane.
A dull ache, pressure or discomfort in the ear.
Ringing, buzzing or humming that isn't coming from outside.
An itchy ear canal that won't settle.
Whistling, feedback, or a hearing aid that doesn't seem to work as well as it should.
Please note: if you have sudden hearing loss, severe pain, discharge or bleeding from the ear, or a high temperature, contact your GP or call NHS 24 on 111 rather than booking ear wax removal.
Many people search for ear syringing because it's what GP surgeries used to offer. Today, many GP practices no longer provide routine ear wax removal, and availability varies from practice to practice.
Jackie doesn't use syringing. She uses microsuction, a modern, water-free method that gently removes wax while she looks closely inside your ear. It's suitable for most people aged 10 and over, including many who can't have water irrigation, and Jackie always checks your ears first.
