Ear wax removal FAQs

Everything you need to know about micro suction ear wax removal at home. Tap a question to see the answer.

Does micro suction hurt?

This is a pain-free procedure with instant results. If any discomfort, Jackie would stop immediately and assess the ear.

How much does ear wax removal cost?

Microsuction ear wax removal at home is £55 for both ears, or £40 for one ear, with no call-out fee or travel charge. For groups of 5–9 people it's £50 per person, and groups of 10 or more can get a personalised quote. If no wax is found, or treatment doesn't go ahead, there's a £10 charge for the ear health check.

What is microsuction?

Microsuction (sometimes written micro suction) is a way of removing ear wax using a small, gentle suction device while looking closely inside the ear. No water is used, so it's clean and quick, with no mess.

Is microsuction safe?

Microsuction is a widely used, well-established way of removing ear wax. As with any procedure, there can be side effects, such as brief dizziness or ringing in the ears, which usually pass quickly. Jackie checks your ears before starting and will stop straight away if you feel unwell or uncomfortable.

Is Jackie insured?

Yes. Jackie is fully insured for micro suction ear wax removal, with professional indemnity and public liability cover. She's happy to show her insurance certificate on request, which care homes and supported-living providers often ask for.

Do you do home visits for ear wax removal?

Yes. Every appointment is a home visit. Jackie comes to you, whether that's your own home, a relative's home, a care home or a supported-living setting, and there's no extra charge for the visit.

Do you offer ear syringing?

No. Jackie uses microsuction, which removes wax with gentle suction rather than water. If you've been looking for ear syringing, microsuction is a modern alternative, and it's suitable for many people who can't have water irrigation. Jackie will check your ears first to make sure it's right for you.

How long does a visit take?

Most appointments take around 15 to 20 minutes, including the check of your ears beforehand. Even if the wax is stubborn, a visit takes no longer than 30 minutes.

Do I need to use olive oil before my appointment?

Usually, yes. We recommend putting olive oil drops in twice a day for at least 3 days before your appointment to soften the wax. Please check with Jackie when you book first, though, as some medical conditions mean oil drops shouldn't be used.

Who can have micro suction?

Micro suction is suitable for most people aged 10 and over, including many who can't have water irrigation. Jackie always checks your ears first. The only times she won't go ahead are if you have an active ear infection or have had recent ear surgery. In those cases, she'll explain why and advise you to see your GP first.

What if there's no wax?

If Jackie checks your ears and there's no wax to remove, or micro suction doesn't go ahead, there's a £10 charge for the ear health check.

Is there a call-out fee?

No. There's no call-out fee anywhere in our area.

How do I pay?

You can pay by cash or bank transfer.

I wear hearing aids. Can you help?

Yes. Wax build-up is common with hearing aids, and Jackie regularly sees hearing aid users. Just mention it when you book.

Can I book for a family member?

Yes, and many of our bookings come from family members. Let us know a little about the person, including any support needs and the best time of day for them.

Can a family member or carer be there?

Of course. A family member or carer is welcome to stay throughout the visit, and for some people that makes all the difference.

What areas do you cover?

We're a fully mobile service covering Edinburgh, the Lothians, Fife, Falkirk, Perth & Kinross, Dundee, Angus, Clackmannanshire, Stirling and Lanarkshire. If you're within about an hour of Central Scotland, get in touch and ask.

What are your opening hours?

We're open 7 days a week, 9am to 9pm.

What if I need to cancel or change my appointment?

There's no charge if you cancel at least 24 hours before your appointment, or if you rebook for another day. If Jackie arrives for your appointment and you're not there, there's a £20 charge.

Do you visit care homes?

Yes. Jackie can see several residents in one visit, with group rates from £50 per person. See our Care Homes page for details.
